She wrote ‘Silent Spring’ in 1962, while suffering from cancer.  She forewarned us that the overuse of pesticides would create an environment that biomagnifies toxins as they move up the food chain, eventually finding their way to us.  She was right.

By 1970, her book spearheaded the Earth Day movement.  After Earth Day, the EPA was created to regulate a new approach to Mother Earth; Clean Air, Water, & Oceans Act, Endangered Species Act, Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Wilderness Act, and many more…

Rachel Carson…thank you for your wisdom…rest in peace.

In 1886, Thomas Stevens became the first person to ride a bike around the world.  In 1896, Annie Kopchovsky beat his record by 18 months.  She was 20 something and a mother of three.  Although she had no cycling experience, she took on the $10,000 wager (a quarter million today) that no woman could match his accomplishment!

Under the terms of the bet, Kopchovsky, who had ridden a bicycle for the first time only days before her departure from Boston, was supposed to begin her journey penniless, earn $5000 above her expenses along the way, and finish her trip in 15 months.
.
She rode a 50 pound, single-geared bicycle.  She dressed as a man and rode a man’s bike.  Londonderry Lithia Spring Water sponsored her.  She started the trip with $100 and a revolver.
.
Her adventures took her to every continent in the Northern Hemisphere.  She rode her 50 pound bike through Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Maylasia and was even briefly imprisoned in China.  In her day the adventure was called “the most extraordinary journey ever taken by a woman!”

She did what they said couldn’t be done…
