The actual pain or discomfort felt 24 to 72 hours after “exercise” is known as Muscle Fever or Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS). Once thought to be caused by lactic acid buildup, we now know that lactic acid disperses quickly in body cells and could best explain current pain during exercise, but not pain days later.
Recent research indicates that the reinforcement process is actually what causes muscle pain. The muscle responds to training by reinforcing itself up to and above its previous strength by increasing the size of muscle fibers. This reinforcement process causes the cells to swell in their fasicle and puts pressure on nerves, producing pain. No pain, no gain…as they say!!!
